Choosing the Right Blinds for Bay Windows

Bali blinds on bay windows in living room

Bay windows are a beautiful source of natural light and can provide a feeling of openness in a room. That said, natural light pouring in during the day can lead to wanting privacy in the evening.

Selecting the right window coverings for the challenging shapes and sizes of a bay window can be tricky. With the right resources and some careful measuring, your bay window can become the interior and exterior focal point of your home!

Which Window Covering Is Right for Your Bay Window?

You may be surprised by how many options you have for window coverings and blinds for bay windows. Each type has its own set of benefits. Which style is right for your home?

Horizontal blinds offer flexible light control and are easy to clean. They’re available in multiple slat sizes and in a huge variety of colors and construction materials, including wood, faux wood, and vinyl. If a timeless look defines your space, horizontal blinds for bay windows can be a classic choice.

A large number of shade options are also available for bay windows! Sheer shades, for example, offer softer lines with gently diffused light. They’re a great choice when warm, soft light takes priority over the need for privacy. Solar shades also offer a great view to the outdoors with a variety of openness options, and provide strong protection from the sun’s rays in a modern package.

One of my favorite styles, Roman shades, offers easy, everyday elegance and can be configured to offer the highest levels of privacy. If your bay window is located in a bedroom or other area where you want a timeless look with more privacy, this may be right for you.

Custom drapery add vertical interest to a bay window while also adding texture and softness. Used alone or paired with blinds for bay windows, drapes have the ability to offer maximum light control and add another layer in keeping out heat and cold!

Custom drapery can be paired with any blind or shade for a combination of window coverings that can be adjusted throughout the day to meet changing sun protection and privacy needs.

Getting the Right Fit with the Proper Measuring Tools

The unique angles of the bay window structure doesn’t have to be intimidating. Check out the simple, straightforward measuring guide for several product lines. The entire measuring process is designed to be simple and efficient. Remember the golden rule: measure twice; install once!

Other Specialty Shapes and Sizes

There are lots of other specialty shapes, besides bay windows. Most products offer some options for specialty shapes. Cellular shades can fit the most shapes, including a full circle or a triangular. Available in a variety of colors, cellular shades give you the option to choose from four levels of opacity, all while improving energy efficiency by trapping air in their honeycomb-shaped cells.

Free Swatches

No two windows are exactly alike, and the same can be said for design styles. One of my favorite parts of the Bali Blinds design process is selecting and ordering my free fabric swatches, which allows me to get a real sense of how the finished product will look in the room.

The number one goal is for you to be thrilled with your new window blinds and shades, and seeing how fabrics play off of existing finishes and design elements is a great first step.
